What Does 5 ATM Mean on a Watch? What You Can (and Can't) Do

Short answer: 5 ATM means that a watch case has been tested against pressure up to 5 bar. It does not automatically mean every watch carrying that mark is suited to the same water activities. Follow the maker's instructions, keep the crown fully closed and account for the condition of the seals.

What does 5 ATM actually mean?

ATM stands for atmosphere; on watches, 5 ATM is commonly used alongside 5 bar. It is a pressure classification describing the conditions under which the case was tested. It is not a literal diving depth.

Treat the marking as the start of the decision, not the entire manual. Makers can give different activity advice for the same rating, and seals can age through wear, knocks and servicing.

What can you do with a 5 ATM watch?

Start with the actual model. Avanté rates the Lunar Black at 5 ATM and advises it for rain and handwashing, but not for swimming, showers or saunas. That is the safe boundary for this model.

Before water contact, make sure the crown is fully pushed in. Do not operate a crown or pusher while the watch is wet. Afterwards, dry the case and bracelet with a soft cloth so moisture and dirt do not sit around the seals.

3 ATM, 5 ATM and 10 ATM: which should you choose?

3 ATM

Use a 3 ATM rating for splashes and rain only when the maker confirms that use. Do not treat it as a swimming rating.

5 ATM

5 ATM provides more allowance for everyday water contact, but the model-specific instructions still apply. For the Avanté Lunar Line, that means rain and handwashing, not swimming, showering or saunas.

10 ATM and above

If you plan to swim regularly, choose a watch whose maker explicitly permits swimming. Even then, check the crown, seals and service guidance: water resistance is not permanent.

A simple buying framework

  • Need a daily watch for rain and handwashing? Confirm that the maker explicitly covers those activities.

  • Want to swim in it? Choose only a watch whose maker specifically says it is suitable for swimming.

  • Want to dive? Look for a watch designed and rated for that use.

  • Has the crown been damaged, the crystal cracked or servicing delayed? Have it checked.

The Avanté Lunar Black combines 5 ATM with a 40 mm case, sapphire crystal, a black dial and an integrated steel bracelet. See the Lunar Black for the full specification.

Our moonphase-watch buying checklist helps you assess water resistance alongside crystal, movement and fit.

Why servicing and crown use matter

A water-resistance mark relies on a system of case, crystal, crown and seals. A hard knock, worn seal or open crown can reduce the protection the watch originally had. Seiko notes that water resistance is not permanently guaranteed and can be affected by ageing seals or damage.

Frequently asked questions

Is 5 ATM the same as 50 metres waterproof?

5 ATM is often paired with 50 metres, but read that as a test classification rather than permission to descend 50 metres. The specific watch manual takes priority.

Can I swim with an Avanté Lunar Black?

No. Avanté advises the Lunar Black for rain and handwashing, not swimming, showers or saunas.

Can I rinse my watch under running water?

Read the maker's instructions first. Citizen lists at least 5 bar as a condition for cleaning under running water, but that does not replace model-specific guidance or a check of the crown and seals.

Why should I not operate the crown while the watch is wet?

An open or operated crown can create a path for moisture. Push the crown fully in before water contact and set the watch only when it is dry.

Does a 5 ATM rating last forever?

No. Seals and components age, and knocks can affect them. Have resistance checked periodically if you use the watch around water.

Conclusion

5 ATM is a useful everyday classification, not a universal activity list. For Avanté, 5 ATM means rain and handwashing—not swimming, showers or saunas.
