The Moon reflects sunlight. As it travels around Earth, we see different portions of its sunlit half. One cycle from new moon to new moon takes about 29.5 days. Waxing means the illuminated portion is growing; waning means it is becoming smaller.

How to read the live display
Illumination estimates how much of the Moon’s visible face is sunlit. The next full moon date uses an average lunar cycle and is approximate. The dial-style window is an illustration, not a telescope image. For more on the science, visit NASA’s guide to moon phases.
