How to Set a Moonphase Watch: Day, Date, Month and Moon Display

Set a moonphase watch by adjusting the day and time first, then the moon display, month and date. On a MIYOTA 6P00, do not quick-set the date between 9:00 pm and 12:30 am; this guide applies to Avanté Lunar watches with that movement.


What are you setting?

The MIYOTA 6P00 is a quartz moonphase movement with separate displays for day, date, month and moon phase. Its moon disc indicates the moon's age and phase; it is not a real-time image of the sky.


Before you start: choose a safe time

Set the time to about 6:00 first. This moves the calendar mechanism out of its overnight changeover. MIYOTA advises against quick-setting the date from 9:00 pm to 12:30 am and the month when the date hand is between the 26th and 31st.

Step 1: set the day and time

Pull the crown to the second position. Turn the hour and minute hands clockwise until the correct day appears; the hour hand needs to advance 24 hours per day. Pay attention to AM and PM, and do not force the day by turning counterclockwise.


Step 2: set the moon display

Pull the crown to the first position and turn it clockwise to advance the moon display. Check a reliable lunar calendar and select the nearest position; a new moon or full moon gives the clearest reference.


Step 3: set the month

Use the month-adjustment button only when the date hand is not between the 26th and 31st. Each press advances one month. Press firmly but never force it, and check both month and date after shorter months.


Step 4: set the date and check everything

Return the crown to the first position and turn it counterclockwise for the quick date correction. Avoid the late-evening window again. Return the crown to normal and check time, day, date, month and moon display together.

  • Watch stopped: set the time to around 6:00 and follow every step.

  • Only moon display is behind: use the first crown position and advance only.

  • Date is 26th–31st: do not quick-set the month; correct time and date first.

Frequently asked questions

Can I set the date in the evening?

It is better not to. MIYOTA advises against quick date correction from 9:00 pm to 12:30 am because the next changeover may fail.

Does the moon disc show the exact moon?

No. It is an indication of the moon's age and phase; set it most accurately at a new moon or full moon.

Why set the hands to 6:00 first?

It keeps the calendar mechanism outside its overnight changeover zone before date or month correction.

Can I turn the moon display backwards?

The 6P00 manual describes advancing it clockwise. Do not force a reverse correction if you overshoot.

Does this work for every moonphase watch?
